The San Diego Padres have found their second basement for the 2009 season. David Eckstein and the Padres signed a one year contract on Wednesday. Eckstein is expected to make around $1 million in the one year deal. Eckstein hit .265 in 324 at-bats last season between stints with the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks.

I would expect to see Eckstein hitting in the number two spot for the Padres as he is a good contact hitter and usually puts the ball in play. He does not hit for power, but he will put the ball in play and get on base. Exactly what the Padres need at the top of the order.

The San Diego Padres have re-signed Mark Prior and signed Chris Burke to one year contracts. Both players will be invited to spring training as well. Prior will make $1 million if he makes it to the big leagues and pitches in a game. Burke is expected to make $650,000 if he makes it to the big leagues and plays in a game.

I would have to say that Burke has a better shot of making the team then Prior just because we are unsure if Prior is healthy for the first time since 2006. I’d love for Prior to make the team and be a middle of the rotation starter but right now he has so many question marks it is unkown.

Either way both signings are pretty cheap and exactly what kind of contracts the Padres needed to sign them to.

The San Diego Padres traded away shortstop Khalil Greene to the St. Louis Cardinals for Minor League right-hander Mark Worrell and a player to be named later on Thursday. The deal was first rumored on Wednesday but the both clubs did not make it official until Thursday.

Worrell was 3-3 with a 2.15 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings with Triple-A Memphis in 2008. He has 84 Minor League saves since being selected by the Cards in the 12th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

The Padres will have until April 1 to choose the other player in the trade. General manager Kevin Towers said that the player would be just as good as Worrell if not better once they choose the player. It is expected to be another pitching prospect.

With the move it sheds away the huge contract that Greene was to be paid next year. The team will probably be playing under a $40 millon dollar payroll in 2009 so they need to cut all the salary that they can and build for the future.

The San Diego Padres fall to The Atlanta Brave to the tune of 4-1. The Paders offense was no where to be find have only 1 run on 4 hits, The Braves on the other hand had 4 runs on 8 hits, with the two out broken bat single that scored two runs in the top of the sixth and The Padres really they never recovered, and just to add to it Brent Lillibridge hit his first homer run of the season to seal the deal. Greg Maddux pitch well pitching 7 inning giving up 3 runs on 6 hits 2 BB and 3 strikeouts, while his counter part C.Morton had 5 and one third inning pitched with 1 ER on 4 hits 3 walks and 4 strikeouts,a combination of C.Morton/Ohman/Boyer/and Gonzalez held the Padres to only one run.

Offensively the Padres were no where to be find with the hightlight being if hardly any were J.Gerut hitting an RBI double off of Morton in the bottom of the fourth scoring A.Gonzalez, that would prove to be it for the Padres as the Braves had 4 runs on 8 hits, one that started the scoring in the top of the third was a sacrifice fly by G.Blanco scoring Lillibridge, then the Francoeur’s broke bat 2 RBI single in the sixth followed by Lillibridge homer in the ninth.

Tomorrow the Padres try to win the series with R.Wolf (6-8 with an 4.38 ERA) going against J.Campillo(3-4 with an 3.06 ERA) it should be a good pitchers duel.

Over 40 thousand plus were on hand to watch some Classic Baseball played by The Padres. Jake Peavy moved his record to a respectable 7-5,with a solid 7 innings pitched on only 4 hits, 0 earned and 7 strikeouts. A good bid too get into the All-Star Game on. Also Hoffman got his 17 save of the year on one strikeout. Heath Bell gave up two hits and but neither sored, also has a strikeout. Mike Adams appeared two thirds of an inning and gave up 2 hits then was removed for Bell. It was also The Padres 5 shutout of the year.

Offensively The Padres looked good, better than they have been scoring 4 runs on 9 hit. Scott Hairston had 2 runs and 2 hits(2B and 3B). While the Gonzales boys gave us something to cheer about Edgar 2 hit and RBI, as Adrian had 2 hits one run and RBI. Chase Headley had 2 hits an strikeout, Jody Gerut had The Brave killing RBI in the bottom of the sixth. All-in-All it was a good classic game ,I was impressed by the towels and am glad too see The Padres win the first game in the series that is important when you play a team like the Braves. Lets continue doing so tomorrow!

The San Diego Padres lost to the Florida Marlins by the score of 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon as the two teams finished up their three game series. The Padres lost two out of three games against the Marlins as they just didn’t play very good baseball the past three days.

Cha Seung Baek took the loss and is now 2-4 after throwing give innings and allowing six hits and three runs. Bryan Corey gave up two big runs in the ninth inning as well which really hurt the team because that pretty much put the game out of reach. Mike Adams, Heath Bell, and Joe Thatcher all threw out of the pen without allowing runs score.

Scott Hairston stayed hot as he had a solo home run in the sixth inning. The Padres then pushed across another run in the ninth inning on a Chase Headley rbi single but that was all they could get.

In the end, it was a dissappointing series for the Padres. They will now be off on Thursday and welcome the Atlanta Braves in for a three game series starting on Friday.

The San Diego Padres put a big whooping on the Florida Marlins Tuesday night as they tied the series up at 1-1 with a 10-1 victory. It was a good game all the way around for the Padres as they hammered the Marlins pitching staff and got some good pitching from their own pitchers.

The Padres got all over the Marlins starting pitcher Andrew Miller for four runs and then hammered the bullpen for six more runs. Chase Headley lead the team with four rbi while Scott Hairston had a three run home run to finish with three rbi. Luis Rodriguez, Nick Hundley, and Brian Myrow all chipped in with one rbi each as well.

Randy Wolf pitched seven innings while giving up five hits and one run to pick up the win. Wolf’s only mistake in the game came in the first inning when he gave up a solo home run to Jeremy Hermida. Wolf is now 6-8 on the season with a 4.38 era.

Joe Thatcher pitched the eighth inning and then Cla Meredith pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish off the Marlins.

The Padres will try to win the series with another victory on Wednesday. Padres Blog

Randy Wolf gave up six hits and seven runs in only four innings of action to take the loss for the Padres. Wolf is now 5-8 on the season and tonight’s game definately won’t help out his stock in a trade. Bryan Corey pitched two scoreless innings while Mike Adams and Carlos Guevara both tossed a inning each without giving up a run.

Chase Headley had the only run for the Padres as he hit a solo home run off Ubaldo Jimenez in the the second inning. The Padres struck out five times and left 16 runners on base as they struggled at the plate in the thin air of Denver.

The Padres will now be off on Thursday before starting a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

After have a big offensive performance on Monday night, the San Diego Padres couldn’t hit the ball on Tuesday night as they were shut out by the Colorado Rockies and lost 4-0. Aaron Cook pretty much dominated the Padres as he tossed a complete game five hitter against them. The Padres and Rockies will now play a rubber match on Wednesday afternoon to see who will win the three game series.

Josh Banks took the loss and fell to 2-3 on the season. Banks was pitching really good until the fifth inning when he gave up four runs. An error by shortstop Khalil Greene didn’t help him out by any means in the fifth inning though. Clay Hensley threw two innings of relief before Cla Meredith pitched the eighth inning.

As for the Padres offense, there really isn’t a whole lot to blog about to be honest. Cook limited them to only five hits in the game and they were not able to score any runs. The offense took zero walks and struck out four times while leaving nine runners on base.

The San Diego Padres had two big innings on Monday night where they scored five and seven runs to beat the Colorado Rockies 15-8. A five run sixth inning inning and then a huge seven run ninth inning fueld the Padres to the win in Denver as they kicked off a three game series with the Rockies.

Edgar Gonzalez went 4-5 with two home runs and three rbi in the game as he had a great night at the plate. Jody Gerut had a three run home run in the ninth inning and also had a rbi in the sixth inning to finish the game with a team high four rbi. Kevin Kouzmanoff added a solo home run and a rbi single as he had two rbi. Brian Giles, Adrian Gonzalez, Khalil Greene, Michael Barrett, Tony Clark, and Craig Stansberry all chipped in with one rbi each as well.

Heath Bell improved his record to 6-3 as he recorded the win for the Padres after throwing the eighth inning. Brett Tomko pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish off the Rockies. Greg Maddux had a bad game as he only lasted 4 2/3 innings after giving up eight hits and eight runs. The Rockies hit Maddux hard, and Maddux was lucky that the Padres came back in the game so he didn’t get the loss.
