After the day off on Monday, and finding out that one of their own has been shipped out to rival team; The San Diego Padres put up a fight against division leading Diamondbacks, but fall to them 6-7 in the long run.

Josh Banks got toss around in the first inning, with 4 runs 6 in total. Going 4 innings,4 hits 6 runs all earned 7 BBs 3 strikeouts giving up one HR to newly acquired D-Backs A.Dunn with his 33rd of the year. Justin Hampson and Brett Tomko throw-up 3 innings of shutout baseball giving up only one hit 2 BBs and 2 strikeout.

Brian Falkenborg gave up 2 hits one run it was earned, with 2 strikeout in one inning of work. The batting lineup goes like this; Brian Giles went 1-4 with a hit with a RBI and a run scored and one BB and one strikeout. Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-5 with a run scored and a strikeout, Adrian Gonzalez went 4-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored brother Edger Gonzalez 1-2 with a run scored and a strikeout. Chase Headley went 2-4 with a run scored, one RBI and two strikeouts.

Nick Hundley went 1-3 with a two BBs and a strikeout, Tadahito Iguchi went 1-3 with a RBI and a strikeout. Jody Gerut went 1-1 with a RBI in a pitch-hit appearance, also new comer Sean Kazmar went 2-1 with a sac-fly RBI his first of RBI of his career.

Tomorrow’s game will be Padres ace Jake Peavy(9-8) vs. D.Haren(13-6) game starts at 6:40pm pt/9:40pm et.               

With The San Diego Padres turning to their newly acquired Rookie Chad Reineke for starting pitching help, he proved he was worth ever bite of ex-Padre Randy Wolf. Reineke looked Sharp; at first he struggled but then he settled in throwing up 5 innings 5 hits 3 runs all earned 3 BBs and 5 strikeouts, all-n-all he was throwing heat and locating with little effort.

The Bullpen followed-up with its shut down self (of lately) with Mike Adams,Clay Hensley,Heath Bell and newly acquired Padre Brian Falkenborg combining to throw up 4 shutout innings behind Reineke; only giving up one hit 2 BBs and 8 strikeouts.

The Batting had a tune that sounded like this, Jody Gerut went 3-5 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Tadahito Iguchi went 2-4 with a hit a BB and 2 strikeouts, Brian Giles went 2-2 with 3 RBIs one hit one run scored and a sac-fly making 4 RBIs. Adrian Gonzalezwent 2-2 with 2 BBs, Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-4 with an RBI, Chase Headley went 2-3 with one hit one walk and 2 runs scored.

Reineke helped himself to 1-2 with RBI hit and a run scored, and a strikeout, also Edger Gonzalez had a walk with a run scored on a pitch-hit appearance.

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes of a rumor that The San Diego Padres might slash payroll from this year’s $73.6MM way down to $40MM.  The Padres reportedly explained this scenario to Brian Giles in an attempt to get him to accept a trade to Boston last week.  Krasovic heard about the pitch via Giles’ teammates, but wasn’t able to draw any comments from GM Kevin Towers.  Scott Miller believes owner John Moores’ divorce is a factor.

The Padres don’t have any large contracts on the books for ‘09; Giles would be their most expensive player at $9MM unless they choose his $3MM buyout.  After that it’s Jake Peavy at $8MM, Khalil Greene at $6.5MM, Chris Young at $4.5MM, and Adrian Gonzalez at $3MM.  By my count they have six arbitration-eligible players, including Josh Bard, Heath Bell, Scott Hairston, and Jody Gerut.  The Padres could retain Giles and still be under $45MM, though that’d leave no money for free agents

On a Sunday afternoon, a good time too enjoy an Ice Cold Coors; the Rockies got a “Cold Hard Blast” from The San Diego Padres, or more like four of them off the bats of the Padres. With that score line you’d think both teams went All-Arms In but not the case.

Chris Younghad his stuff, then he didn’t have his stuff; throwing 3 shutout innings before he fell apart at the seams, going 4 innings on 9 hits 7 runs all earned with 3 BB 2 strikeouts and giving up one home run. All of this way in the 4th inning, then Bud Blackthe clever lefty, throw-up two of he’s own two praised left-handers out of his pen; Justin Hampson and Wilfredo Ledezma put 5 innings of shutout baseball with 5hits 2 BB 3 strikeouts between them, Hampson getting the win.

The Lineup batted like this: Jody Gerut went 3-6 with a 3run HR 2hits and 2 runs scored, Luis Rodriguez went 2-6 with two runs scored. Brian Giles went 4-6 with a 2run HR 3hits 2RBIs and 4 runs scored, Adrian Gonzalez went 4-5 with 4 hits 2 RBI 3 runs scored and a BB. Kevin Kouzmanoff went 3-6 a 2 run home run hie 17th of the year, also had  2 hits and a run scored, Chase Headley went 1-2 with a hit a RBI and a run scored and had 3 BB.

Luke Carlin got his first homer of the year a 2 run shot, also a hit two other RBI 2 runs scored one BB and 2 strikeouts, Edger Gonzalez  went 1-5 with a run scored one hit one walk and two strikeouts.

Tomorrow’s game the Padres are back in San Diego at Petco Park with Cha Seung Baek(4-6) vs. J.Suppan(7.7) game starts at 7:05pm pt/10:05pm et.

On the Saturday night game in San Diego most of The San Diego Padres fans were preparing for the Chargers Pre-Season Game vs. Dallas, but for those who where flipping back n’ forth they saw a very good pitched game by “Greg Mad Dog Maddux” the 3rd straight that the rest of the Padres lineup back him scoring wise. He went six innings giving up 6 hits 2 runs both earned one BB 4 strikeouts and gave up one home run; very solid again, I hope he get his shot at winning at least 10 games this year making it 20 years with least 10 or more games won.

Bullpen Notes: Mike Adams, Clay Hensley, Heath Bell, Cla Meredith and Trevor Hoffman combined to throw up 3 scoreless innings one hit 3 BB and 2 strikeouts, and Hoffman getting his 25th save of the year. On a bad Bullpen note: Bryan Corey gave up 2 hits and one run scored it was earned and got no one out.
The bats came alive in the sixth after being tied 1-1 the Padres put together a series of hits that scored them 5 runs. Adrian Gonzalez went 2-5 with his 28th homer of the year also had another hit with an RBI and two runs scored; Luis Rodriguez went 3-5 with two runs scored and a strikeout. Kevin Kouzmanoff also went 3-5 two runs scored and an RBI with one strikeout.
Chase Headley went 2-5 with a run scored and two RBIs plus a strikeout.

Nick Hundley went 1-4 with a run scored and two RBIs and two strikeout, and good ole’ Mad Dog went 1-3 with a RBI bunt single in the sixth too keep the rally alive, as usual Maddux helping his own case for a win. Brian Giles went 0-5 with a strikeout, 3 ground-outs and a pop-up.

On a Friday raining night in Colorado with a 52 minute rain delay,The San Diego Padres’ Jake Peavy wasn’t looking his ace stuff going 6 innings giving up 5 hits on 3 runs all earned with 5 BB 3 strikeouts and one HR. For Coors field that is ace caliper stuff, and the game was still manigable when he turned it over too the bullpen.

Wilfredo Ledezma walk one and let one score and couldn’t get anyone out, Cla Meredith went two thirds of an inning giving up one hit 2 BB 2 run both earned and had one strike out. Clay Hensleywent one and one third innings  scoreless giving up only one hit and fanning three.

Brian Giles hit his 7th homer of the year maybe his motor has started with all the trade rumors, Scott Hairston went 2-5, Kevin Kouzmanoff went 3-4, Chase Headley went 2-4 with a run scored. Also Nick Hundley went 3-4 with a hit a run scored and a RBI and Tadahito Iguchi had a hit and a RBI.

Tomorrow’s game will be hopefully a winning streak continued for Greg”Mad Dog”Maddux(5-8) vs. A.Cook(14-7) it will be a pitchers duel for sure! Game starts at 5:05pm pt/6:05pm ct/8:05pm et

The Brian Giles situation should be resolved today.  New take on it this morning: Michael Silverman of the Boston Heraldhas a baseball source indicating “the Red Sox claimed Giles out of legitimate interest and not as an attempt to keep another team from claiming him.”

2:17pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says Giles would have vetoed a deal to the Rays as well.  Cafardo believes the Red Sox will continue to monitor the waiver wire for a bench bat.  Amalie Benjamin says the Sox weren’t broken up about Giles’ decision, and trade talks didn’t get too far.

12:55pm: It’s official - Giles has blocked the deal.  The window has closed.   You may recall he originally took less to sign with the Padres back in ‘05.

12:35pm: ESPN’s Buster Olney says Giles plans to block a trade to Boston.

Ken Rosenthal wrote yesterday, “the move was apparently designed as a block to prevent the Tampa Bay Rays from claiming Giles, sources say.”

4:34pm: Tom Krasovic has further musings on the Giles situation.  He wonders if the Red Sox could rent Giles for the rest of the season and then let him go back to the Padres as a free agent.

THURSDAY, 11:06am: Interestingly, the Red Sox won the claim on Giles.  Their intent was to block the Rays, according to Ken Rosenthal.  Giles can veto a trade to Boston, and he might simply because his playing time could be reduced.  Also, I have learned that Giles would still be able to veto a straight salary dump.  The Padres can’t use this situation to sneak around Giles’ no-trade clause.

Boston winning the claim means all NL teams passed on Giles, as well as most AL teams.

On a Thursday afternoon The San Diego Padreslose again as the Mets David Wright hits a walk-off home run to end it in the bottom of the ninth, when in the inning prior to thatJody Gerut hit a home run to tie it up!

Also Chase Headley hit his 8th homer of the year off of Santana, his second in two games. Another notes Adrian Gonzalez had a hit an RBI one BB and two strikeouts, brother Edger Gonzalezhad a pitch-hit appearance with a hit and a run scored, Brian Gileshad one too but was not successfulwith a ground-out in the 8th inning.

Pitching: Josh Banks went 5 innings gave up 9 hits 3 runs all earned one walk 4 strikeouts. Cla Meredith and Byan Corey combinedtwo throw up 3 innings of shutout baseball with one hit and one strikeout a peace. Heath Bell on the other hand pitched two thirds of an inning giving up two hit 2 run both earned, one being the home run by D.Wright to walk-off with it.

Tomorrow’s game the Padre will be take on the Rockies in Coors Field with their ace Jake Peavy(8-7) vs. ex-Padre(still on payroll) Glendon Rusch(4-3) at 6:05pm pt/7:05pm ct/9:05pm et. One one unhappy note both  Bud Black and bench coach Craig Colbert were ejected in today’s game in the 8th inning. 

CHICAGO — Maybe Jason Bay wasn’t the last of Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein’s acquisitions to bolster the club for the stretch run.

In a development that was first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune and then confirmed by several other media outlets, the Red Sox claimed veteran outfielder Brian Giles off of waivers from The San Diego Padres. According to the Boston Globe, the claim was put in on Wednesday. The Red Sox have exclusive negotiating rights with the Padres for 48 hours, meaning the situation should be resolved by Friday.

If a trade can’t be worked out, the 37-year-old Giles would stay with the Padres.

Giles confirmed the report to media members at Shea Stadium following San Diego’s 5-3 loss to the Mets on Thursday afternoon, saying he had spoken by phone with Padres general manager Kevin Towers, and added that he might know more by the time the Padres landed in Colorado late Thursday night.

“They are a good team,” Giles, a left-handed hitter, said of the Red Sox.

Joe Bick, who represents Giles, declined to comment on the matter. Teams are not allowed to comment publicly on waiver claims, otherwise they face a severe fine from Major League Baseball.

Though Giles wouldn’t start for a Boston team that has Bay in left, Jacoby Ellsbury in center, J.D. Drew in right and David Ortiz at designated hitter, he would give the team an established bat off the bench, not to mention injury protection.

Ortiz came off the disabled list on July 25 after missing seven weeks with a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Though the left-handed slugger felt some “clicking” in the wrist in his last at-bat on Monday, he was fine in the ensuing two games against the Royals.

Adding another wrinkle to the situation is that the Red Sox are one of eight teams Giles can veto a trade to.

“It just comes down to comfort, you know?” Giles said. “This thing could go in a million different directions. … Right now, it’s very general.”

Conceivably, the Red Sox could have simply put in the waiver claim to block their fellow postseason contenders — the Angels and Rays — from getting Giles. But the Boston Herald, citing a baseball source, reported that the Red Sox have legitimate interest in Giles and that was their only motive for making the claim.

The Padres hold a club option of $9 million on Giles for 2009, which comes with a $3 million buyout.

Giles said that one factor he would weigh as it pertains to a trade to the Red Sox is how he would fit into the club’s plans for 2009. That could be a sticking point, as Bay, Ellsbury and Drew are all under contract for 2009, as is backup center fielder Coco Crisp.

Giles is batting .295 with six home runs and 37 RBIs this season. Currently in his sixth season with the Padres, he has become comfortable in San Diego.

“It’s a business — main thing,” Giles said. “Like I said, it’s so general right now, there is nothing to report other than I have been claimed, and that’s it.”

Giles, a two-time All-Star, has played in 1,742 games, hitting .293 with 279 homers and 1,029 RBIs.

Brian Giles Claimed On Waivers

According to Ken Rosenthal, Padres right fielder Giles was claimed on waivers by an unknown team. Giles has about $2.7MM left on his contract this year. He also has a $9MM option for ‘09 with a $3MM buyout (which logically should be exercised). Giles gets another $2MM if traded. Rosenthal adds that Giles can block deals to the Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, Rays, Marlins, Brewers, Pirates, and Nationals.
Rosenthal says the Padres will attempt to make a deal with the claiming team, though it won’t be a salary dump. Giles, 37, is hitting .318/.405/.438 away from PETCO this year. Not too many players are capable of a .400 OBP.
