Tim Hudson had to calm himself down after a tough first inning. It was bad enough that Eric Patterson led off with a single, stole second base and scored. But Hudson blamed himself for letting Patterson reach third with an errant throw on pickoff attempt that sailed over shortstop Alex Gonzalez's head and into the outfield.

Ryan Ludwick thought Ian Desmond made a great play. Desmond didn't think so at all. The not-so-great play was a grounder Ludwick hit up the middle that scored the winning run for the San Diego Padres as the Washington Nationals lost their ninth of 11 games, 5-4 to San Diego. With Drew Storen (4-2) on the mound, Jorge Cantu doubled with one out.

Adams' slider to Michael Morse was hit to San Diego's bullpen, and while Morse and his Washington Nationals teammates celebrated a 2-1 win, the Padres were left with yet another bitter defeat. Michael Morse hit a home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Washington Nationals to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. With the game tied at 1, Morse hit Mike Adams' first pitch into the left field bullpen, and he trotted around the bases, tossed his helmet off and was pounded by his exuberant teammates.
