Jon Garland believes getting out of a first-inning jam Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals was the thin line between a win and a loss. He was probably right. Garland escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning with two strikeouts and went on to throw seven strong innings to help the San Diego Padres to a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals.

The San Diego Padres recalled rookie outfielder Luis Durango from Triple-A Portland on Tuesday. Durango replaces right-handed pitcher Luis Perdomo, who was optioned back to Portland following Sunday's game at Seattle. Perdomo was with the Padres just one day following his recall from Portland. Durango hit .545 with six hits in 11 at-bats in September for San Diego.

Neither the Seattle Mariners or a migraine headache could prevent Mat Latos from posting yet another fantastic start in May. The San Diego Padres recalled right-hander Luis Perdomo from Triple-A Portland and optioned left-handed reliever Cesar Ramos. San Diego made the moves Saturday before the second game of a weekend interleague series in Seattle. Perdomo made his major league debut last season with the Padres. This year at Portland, he is 1-2 with a 3.76 ERA in 16 relief appearances.
